1972 Chevrolet El Camino SS-350-Auto-AC

1972 Chevrolet El Camino SS – A Muscle-Bound Utility Classic Reimagined

By 1972, the Chevrolet El Camino had firmly established its identity as a one-of-a-kind blend between muscle car aggression and pickup practicality. In its fifth and final year of the third generation, the '72 El Camino SS brought with it the sleek Chevelle front end, upgraded SS styling, and engine options that allowed it to stand toe-to-toe with Detroit’s most powerful machines—all while offering enough bed space for a day's haul or a tailgate cooler. Though production would shift and soften with the coming years, the '72 model remains a high-water mark for style, power, and old-school cool.

This particular 1972 El Camino SS, finished in a striking red with black SS stripes and a black vinyl top, is a fantastic example of that golden era—a machine that’s been both preserved and elevated through tasteful upgrades. Originally painted Gulf Green Poly (code 43G), it now wears a bold red finish that reflects its performance personality. The restoration wasn’t just skin-deep, either—underneath the cowl-induction hood lies a built 350 V8 that dyno’d at an impressive 360 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. It’s not the original engine, but it’s backed by documentation including a dyno sheet, Protect-O-Plate, and a folder of receipts, confirming its pedigree as a true SS with performance in its veins.

The powerplant is complemented by a Turbo 350 3-speed automatic transmission and a set of performance components, including an Edelbrock intake manifold, Holley carburetor, MSD ignition system, headers, H-pipe dual exhaust, and Flowmaster mufflers with full tailpipes. These enhancements aren’t just for show—they provide real muscle, and the El Camino puts that power down through a 12-bolt rear end and wide Cooper Cobra radials on 15" Rally wheels (sized 245/60 up front and 275/60 out back).

Inside, the El Camino continues to impress. The black interior (code 732A51) features a split bench seat, column shifter, factory tachometer, and a 3-gauge pod tucked under the dash for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and voltage. While the original dash clock is non-functional, creature comforts haven’t been ignored—cold-blowing factory air conditioning now runs an upgraded compressor, and tunes are delivered by a modern Kenwood AM/FM/USB/AUX unit discreetly mounted in the glove box. Manual windows and locks remain, keeping the cabin clean and simple.

Underneath, the El Camino is described as “very solid,” and inspection notes confirm original floor pans and minimal corrosion—a real asset for a vehicle now over five decades old. Suspension upgrades include front coilovers, tubular upper and lower control arms, sway bars, and coil-assist rear shocks, giving the car a tight, confident road feel. The power steering system and power front disc brakes ensure that this SS is as enjoyable to drive as it is to look at.

What really sets this vehicle apart is the balance it strikes between vintage charm and modern performance. It preserves much of the El Camino’s iconic look—from the SS stripes to the hood pins and vinyl top—while integrating high-quality mechanical upgrades that enhance reliability, responsiveness, and driving enjoyment. With only 6,664 miles showing on the odometer (mileage not verified), this El Camino’s time-capsule condition and documented build make it a standout from any angle.

Whether cruising the streets, turning heads at local shows, or tucked into a garage collection, this 1972 Chevrolet El Camino SS serves as a thrilling reminder of when utility met muscle—and both came out winners.
