1996 Ford Mustang Cobra / 4.6 V8 / 5 Speed / AC / 18K Miles

1996 Ford Mustang Cobra – 4.6L DOHC V8 Mystic Time Capsule

The 1996 Ford Mustang Cobra marked a milestone moment for Ford’s SVT (Special Vehicle Team) division and the Mustang lineage itself. As the first Cobra to feature Ford’s modular 4.6-liter DOHC V8 engine, it was a departure from the 5.0L pushrod engine that had long defined the Mustang GT and Cobra models of the past. This new powerplant delivered a high-revving, 305 horsepower punch and a 7,000 RPM redline—ushering in a new era of Mustang performance. With aggressive yet refined styling cues, improved handling, and performance-tuned suspension, the ’96 Cobra carved out its own unique legacy in the pony car family tree.

Among these trailblazing Mustangs, few are as special—or as rare—as this one: a Mystic-painted 1996 Mustang SVT Cobra, VIN 1FALP47V1TF170537, with just 18,359 actual miles and an uncompromising level of originality.

A Rare Factory Finish: Mystic Paint

Finished in its original “LF” Mystic paint, this Cobra represents one of just 1,999 produced in this chameleon-like hue, exclusive to the 1996 model year. Mystic paint was developed in collaboration with BASF and featured a color-shifting formula that transitions between green, purple, teal, and black depending on light and angle—an optical marvel that was ahead of its time and remains a collector’s favorite today. The factory body panels wear their original VIN tags, and the finish shows beautifully, maintaining its showroom glow with only minimal road chips noted.

Originality, Performance, and Comfort

Beneath the hood lies the original 4.6L DOHC 32-valve V8, backed by the factory T-45 5-speed manual transmission. This was the first year for this modern powertrain setup in the Cobra, offering smoother revs, more refined power delivery, and a newfound sophistication in performance. The engine bay maintains its factory stock presentation, including OE exhaust manifolds, stock catalytic converters, H-pipe, mufflers, and tailpipes—a rarity in a market full of modded examples. The car rides on factory 17" aluminum 5-spoke Cobra wheels, now wrapped in fresh 245/45ZR17 Sumitomo HTRZ5 performance tires, dated 2024.

Mechanically, this Cobra performs like it just rolled off the assembly line. The Hydroboost 4-wheel disc brakes, power rack and pinion steering, and 3.27 Traction-Lok rear axle all function perfectly. A comprehensive inspection confirms that the drivetrain, suspension, and undercarriage remain original and in excellent condition, with only minimal surface corrosion observed. It’s tight, smooth, and factory-correct down to the tiniest detail.

Comfortably Classic Inside

The interior showcases the rare “4J” Black leather bucket seats, and every component—manual passenger seat, power 4-way driver seat, center console, and controls—functions properly. The dashboard houses the original Ford AM/FM stereo and separate CD player, part of the desirable Mach 460 premium sound system, and both sound and radio power check out perfectly. Even the air conditioning system blows ice cold, making this Cobra not only a performer, but also a pleasure cruiser.

Additional factory features include:

  • Cruise control

  • Tilt column

  • Power locks, windows, and mirrors

  • Electric rear window defroster

  • Fog lights and illuminated visor mirrors

  • Remote keyless entry

  • Anti-theft system

  • Factory aluminum mini-spare

  • Aluminum radiator with electric fan

The original owner’s manual still resides in the glove box, and the trunk release button, located within, is fully operational. A Marti Report confirms the vehicle’s factory build details and rarity, while a clean CarFax outlines its two-owner North Carolina history and confirms no accidents or odometer issues. Notably, the car was sold new by Champion Ford in Rockingham, NC, and remained with the original owner for nearly 28 years before changing hands in 2024.

This 1996 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra stands as a nearly untouched example of a truly revolutionary pony car. With its incredibly low mileage, rare Mystic paint, and documented original condition, it offers a preserved glimpse into 1990s Ford performance at its best.
