1965 Ford Mustang Fastback - Original 289 - 4 Speed - AC

A Bit of Mustang History

The 1965 Mustang represents the first full model year in the Mustang lineage, and by then Ford was well on its way to defining the “pony car” class. In 1964½ the Mustang stunned the world; by 1965 it had gained momentum, with subtle refinements and growing popularity among performance enthusiasts and daily drivers alike. The 289 V8 engine quickly became a favorite among buyers desiring more performance, and the 4‑speed manual transmission offered real driving engagement. Over time, many ’65s have become highly collectible, especially those with matching numbers and rare performance options.

Driving Experience & Character

Despite its cosmetic quirks (which add to its patina), this Mustang retains a sprightly road presence. It “cruises well and has a nice road feel,” per mechanical notes — firm without floating, responsive, and solid underfoot. Steering has a bit of play (common for the era), but the car doesn’t wander. The A/C system is a welcome modern convenience, allowing for better comfort during Texas drives. While the speedometer is audible in use, it remains functional and serviceable.

This is a Mustang with heart — it blends classic muscle car feel, the purist engagement of a 4-speed manual, and enough thoughtful updates (cooling fan, intake, exhaust, suspension) to make it enjoyable for regular use or weekend drives.
