Restored 1972 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS - Numbers 350 - Auto - Vintage AC

1972 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS – A Bronze Beauty Reborn

The 1972 Chevrolet Camaro stands as a resilient symbol of American muscle, shaped during a transformative period in automotive history. As the second-generation Camaro entered its third production year, Chevrolet refined the car’s styling with a cleaner, more European-inspired design while still clinging to the raw power and aggressive stance that muscle car fans loved. Unfortunately, the 1972 model year also marked a turning point—due to a 174-day GM strike, production numbers were down, making surviving examples that much more desirable today.

This particular RS/SS Camaro is a prime tribute to that era—restored, numbers-matching, and tastefully upgraded with modern amenities while maintaining its period-correct charm. Wearing its original Code 68 Midnight Bronze Poly paint, this car is a rare sight. The deep metallic brown finish shimmers subtly under the sun, contrasting beautifully with the light tan vinyl interior (Code 779), recreating the original showroom look with meticulous detail.

Under the hood beats a numbers-matching 350ci V8 (engine suffix CKD), mated to a TH350 automatic transmission—a classic pairing known for smooth power delivery and bulletproof reliability. The factory 10-bolt rear end, dual exhaust with factory-style mufflers, and stock manifolds all speak to its authenticity. The 15” Rally wheels wrapped in 2022-dated tires (245/60 front, 255/60 rear) complete the car’s muscular stance while keeping it grounded.

Inside, the cabin echoes classic muscle vibes with a horseshoe shifter, bucket seats, and center console, while blending in subtle upgrades like a Bluetooth AM/FM stereo for modern convenience. The dash is clean and uncracked, the door panels retain their original appearance, and even the factory clock and gauges are present. Manual windows, locks, and mirrors preserve its old-school character, while tilt steering and vintage air conditioning make it an easy cruiser.

What truly sets this Camaro apart is the quality of the restoration. Described as rotisserie restored, it boasts red oxide painted floors, a tight, responsive suspension with new front-end components, and newer rear shocks and leaf springs. The undercarriage reveals very solid floor pans, and even minor repairs were completed with care, showing an overall level of attention befitting a collector-grade muscle car.

From a performance standpoint, this Camaro “runs, drives, stops, and steers fantastic,” according to the PC Classic Cars team. The transmission shifts crisply, the engine delivers strong but manageable power, and the ride is tight and refined—indicative of a thoughtful, full restoration. Mechanically, it checks all the boxes: cold A/C, functional lights and wipers, working gauges, and even the original shift indicator, albeit slightly misaligned.

As an RS/SS trim, this car represents the pinnacle of the '72 lineup, combining Rally Sport styling (hidden wipers, trim upgrades) with Super Sport performance. Add to that its original build sheet and restoration documentation, and this Camaro becomes a time capsule for one of the last great muscle cars before federal regulations and fuel crises reshaped the American auto industry forever.
