1987 Chevrolet Suburban 4X4 / 350 / 700R4 / AC

1987 Chevrolet Suburban 4X4 – A Two-Tone Trailblazer with True Utility

In the world of American utility vehicles, few names resonate with as much old-school grit and family-hauling prowess as the Chevrolet Suburban. By 1987, the Suburban had already cemented itself as a multi-generational icon, beloved by ranchers, off-roaders, and growing families alike. That year marked the final stretch of the legendary 7th generation (1973–1991), which brought square-body style, robust build quality, and ever-increasing creature comforts. Among its most desirable configurations was the V10 4X4, boasting fuel injection, a rugged chassis, and plenty of space to carry both people and gear across any terrain.

This 1987 Suburban, proudly finished in its original two-tone Steel Gray (Code 90) and Apple Red (Code 72), is a remarkably preserved and tastefully upgraded specimen that captures everything great about the era. With only 88,475 actual miles on the odometer and a clean Carfax history to match, it’s a true time capsule from the golden age of GM full-size utility vehicles.

Engineered for Adventure

Powering this Suburban is a TBI 350 V8, mated to the well-regarded 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission—a combo that offered smooth highway cruising and off-road dependability. The factory 10-bolt rear end, New Process 208F transfer case, manual locking hubs, and full 4X4 system made it trail-ready right from the showroom floor. Underneath, the truck features quad front shocks, a front sway bar, and a steering dampener, all contributing to its planted, confidence-inspiring ride.

The exhaust system has been upgraded slightly with an aftermarket muffler, retaining stock manifolds, the original crossover pipe, and catalytic converter—a nod to keeping things both functional and era-correct. Even after nearly four decades, this truck runs and drives great, showing just how well it has been cared for.

Rugged Charm Meets Comfort

Inside, this Suburban features the factory Slate Gray cloth interior (Code 982D), including bucket seats and a center console—a somewhat uncommon spec for Suburbans of the time, often delivered with bench seats. Amenities include power windows and locks, tilt steering, and front and rear air conditioning (with the front blowing cold and the rear requiring a blower motor replacement). A modern AM/FM/USB/Aux stereo has been installed to complement your retro road trips.

Despite some signs of age in the upholstery and interior panels, the original character remains firmly intact. Even the SPID decal is still in place, ensuring authenticity. Notably, the third-row seat is missing, but the cargo area remains spacious and utilitarian.

Original Looks, Modern Tires

Rolling on 15” Rally wheels wrapped in Toyo Open Country 31x10.50R15 tires, the truck maintains a strong period-correct stance with a hint of off-road capability. The body, solid and impressively clean underneath, has been repainted in its factory two-tone scheme and still wears its factory body side and wheel lip moldings with pride. Though the repaint has some visible patina and touchups, it adds to the Suburban’s rugged appeal as a truck that was built to be used, not just admired.

An Honest, Well-Maintained Survivor

With 33 detailed records in its Carfax, most from Washington and Idaho, this Suburban has enjoyed consistent care. Service entries include regular maintenance items like spark plugs, distributor caps, coolant work, A/C recharges, and steering gear replacements. While a potential odometer rollover is noted due to the 5-digit mechanical odometer, all signs point to the 88k miles being actual and consistent with the vehicle’s history and condition.

Whether hauling the family to a mountain cabin or rolling through a classic car meet, this Suburban offers a unique blend of size, capability, and character that few vehicles of its era can match.
