1972 Ford Ranchero GT – Ivy Green Power with a 351C Roar

Blending the lines between muscle car and utility vehicle, the 1972 Ford Ranchero GT was Ford's bold answer to the age-old question: “What if your work truck had the heart of a Mustang?” Emerging from a lineage that started in 1957, the Ranchero evolved into a muscle-bound hauler by the early '70s. The GT trim, in particular, gave enthusiasts a way to have their cake and haul it too — with visual aggression, spirited powertrains, and everyday practicality. In 1972, Ford restyled the Ranchero on the Torino platform, with a longer, more sculpted body and a bold new front end. For many, this model year marked the high point of performance styling in the Ranchero lineage before regulations softened muscle cars in the years that followed.

This 1972 Ranchero GT, now cataloged as a sold classic at PC Classic Cars in Sherman, Texas, represents a superb slice of that golden era. Finished in its factory-correct "4R" Ivy Green Metallic—a rare and distinguished hue applied to only 752 Rancheros that year—it presents with timeless curb appeal. Although it has been repainted, the restoration was faithful to its original specification, as verified by the Marti Report. Complementing the body is a set of 15-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels wrapped in period-correct 235/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires (2021 date-coded), enhancing both stance and drivability.

Under the hood beats a strong-running 351C 4V Cleveland V8—an upgrade from the original 2V configuration the car was born with. Though it's not the original engine, the Cleveland powerplant remains era-appropriate and brings legendary performance potential to the table. Topped with an Edelbrock carburetor and exhaling through ceramic-coated headers into dual Flowmaster mufflers, this Ranchero doesn’t just look the part—it sounds it, too. A Sanden A/C compressor and conversion to modern R134A refrigerant keep things cool inside, while power front disc brakes and power steering ensure road manners worthy of a GT badge.

The FMX 3-speed automatic transmission feeds torque to a rugged Ford 9” rear end, a favorite among muscle car enthusiasts for its strength and reliability. Suspension enhancements include a front sway bar, and the shocks have been updated, ensuring this classic hauler feels solid and composed on modern roads.

Inside, the truck maintains its original “FR” code Green Vinyl bench seat trim, tastefully restored with newer upholstery and carpets, while door panels and a dash cap offer refreshed presentation. The dash houses a functional 3-gauge pod keeping tabs on oil pressure, water temp, and voltage—classic touches that nod to its muscle car intentions. Manual windows, manual locks, and a remote driver’s mirror round out a refreshingly analog driving experience. Even the factory AM radio remains in place, though it's now silent—a quiet tribute to simpler times.

From the undercarriage to the engine bay, this Ranchero shows an honest and largely original character, save for practical enhancements that elevate performance and comfort. The Marti Report confirms its original build at the Atlanta plant, and a retail sale from D and D Motors in Greer, South Carolina, with the car rolling off the line on June 12, 1972. One of just 489 built with this exact paint and trim combo, it is a standout example of an uncommon muscle truck.

At the time of check-in, this vehicle showed 67,952 miles on the odometer, and while actual mileage can’t be verified, its mechanical integrity and strong road performance speak volumes. Backed by a clean presentation and a great road feel at 70 mph, this Ranchero GT wasn’t just preserved—it was made to be enjoyed.
