1971 Ford Torino GT Convertible / M- Code 351C-4V V8 / Automatic

1971 Ford Torino GT Convertible – M-Code Muscle with Open-Air Attitude

In the waning days of the muscle car era, the 1971 Ford Torino GT Convertible stood as one of Detroit’s last roars of raw power mixed with drop-top elegance. This particular Torino GT, built at the Lorain plant in Ohio and finished in its original Code “S” Gray Gold Metallic, exemplifies the best of early '70s Ford design and performance—especially when paired with the coveted M-code 351 Cleveland 4-barrel V8 under its hood.

A Muscle Car with Rare Genes

The 1971 Torino GT Convertible was produced in limited numbers, and this example—VIN 1H37M125049—is one of just 262 built with its specific engine and transmission configuration. Even more exclusive, only 34 were finished in Gray Gold Metallic, and just six featured this paint/trim combination of “S” with “YA” Black Knit Vinyl interior, according to the Deluxe Marti Report.

At its core is a factory-original M-code 351C-4V V8, a performance engine that bridged the gap between street and strip with high-flow heads and large ports. It's backed by a C6 Select-Shift 3-speed automatic transmission, feeding power through a rugged 9-inch Ford rear end. This drivetrain setup was born for open-road cruising with a punch.

Preserving Original Flair

This Torino still wears its factory color—an older repaint of the factory Gray Gold Metallic—and remains a striking visual standout thanks to its black power convertible top with glass rear window, original-style laser stripes, and newly added 15" Magnum 500 wheels with staggered BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised white letter tires (235/60 front, 255/60 rear).

Inside, the cabin presents a time-traveling experience with its mostly original “YA” code Black Knit Vinyl bucket seats, center console, and Philco AM radio. The dash retains its vintage charm with an OE temperature gauge and working indicators. It’s a "survivor" style interior that feels authentic and inviting.

Mechanical Confidence

According to the PC Classic Cars inspection, this Torino runs and drives great, with fully functional power steering, power front disc brakes, and tight road manners. While mileage reads 17,319, actual mileage cannot be verified. The engine bay shows a date-coded D0AE-L block with a 0H27 date code, further validating its authenticity.

The undercarriage is solid and reflects its age respectfully, with a well-preserved frame and suspension that retains many original components. The ball joints and outer tie rods have been replaced, contributing to the car’s composed handling. The suspension also features sway bars and power steering, enhancing its grand touring capability.

Documented History & Authenticity

Delivered new to B.Z. Mellinger Inc. in New Holland, Pennsylvania, this Torino was ordered through the Philadelphia DSO and completed on October 7, 1970—six days ahead of schedule. Options included the Visibility Group, hidden headlamps, and sports wheel covers, which highlight its original GT trim.

With its full Marti Report, strong mechanical condition, and rare factory specs, this Torino GT represents the end of an era where Ford still blended muscle with drop-top style. It remains a time capsule of American performance heritage.
