1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III / Original 460 V8 / Automatic / AC

1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III – A Presidential Presence on Wheels

The 1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III stands as a beacon of American automotive luxury—crafted during a time when personal luxury coupes were the ultimate expression of elegance, status, and engineering finesse. Developed as Lincoln’s answer to the Cadillac Eldorado, the Mark III offered an aristocratic silhouette paired with muscle under the hood. With its distinct Rolls-Royce-inspired grille, sculpted long hood, and rich interior appointments, the Mark III quickly became a symbol of executive-class cruising.

Debuting in 1968 as a 1969 model, the Continental Mark III was based on the Thunderbird chassis but elevated the luxury game by incorporating deep-pile carpeting, real wood accents, and a host of electric features. For 1970, refinements included concealed windshield wipers and a rim-blow steering wheel. Under the hood sat the mighty 460 cubic-inch V8—an engine that provided effortless power to match the car’s commanding road presence.

This particular 1970 Mark III, finished in a glossy black over white leather interior, originally wore Medium Ivy Green Metallic paint and is a wonderfully preserved example of Lincoln’s finest offerings during the Nixon-era automotive scene. With just 52,149 miles showing on the odometer (mileage unverified), it houses its original, numbers-matching 460 V8 paired to the robust C6 three-speed automatic transmission. According to the Marti Report, this Lincoln was built at the Wixom plant and sold new through De Santis Lincoln-Mercury in Jamestown, New York, with a scheduled production date of March 2, 1970—rolling off the line just three days later on March 5.

The 460 V8 breathes through stock manifolds into a dual exhaust system with an H-pipe and factory-style mufflers, maintaining the car’s original character. A 9-inch Traction-Lok rear end and power front disc brakes ensure it drives as confidently as it looks. This particular Mark III is equipped with a rare combination of both luxury and performance features including a tilt steering column, power windows, electric rear defroster, AM radio, and the iconic rim-blow steering wheel. The factory air conditioning system has been converted to R134a and awaits further diagnostic work.

The interior, coded “2W” for white leather with black accents, remains largely original and retains its lounge-like atmosphere. The split bench seat and power seat assembly (currently non-functional) invite you into an environment once tailored for America’s elite. Its black vinyl roof, also listed on the Marti Report, adds a stately touch to the already formidable design.

Notable is its high degree of originality: the undercarriage remains solid with heavy factory undercoating still visible. The original suspension components, although aged, show this Mark III to be a true survivor vehicle. 15” OE wheels wrapped in whitewall Nexen tires (2023) add to its authenticity. This Lincoln’s presence is further bolstered by rich chrome accents, complete exterior trim, and hubcaps that speak to the car’s grand era of American motoring.

With only 130 vehicles produced in this exact paint and trim combination, this Lincoln stands as a uniquely equipped example from the total 21,432 built with this engine and transmission pairing. The Marti Report confirms its rarity and factory originality, enhancing its historic value.
