1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS 396 – Muscle and Utility in Cranberry Red
In 1970, Chevrolet’s El Camino hit its performance peak, blending Chevelle SS muscle with the versatility of a truck bed. The SS 396 variant was especially popular, pairing aggressive styling with a big-block heart that placed it squarely in muscle car territory. With its dual identity, the El Camino appealed to enthusiasts who wanted the power of a Chevelle SS and the practicality of a pickup. The 1970 model year also marked the high watermark for GM’s A-body styling—featuring a sculpted grille, quad headlamps, and bulging fenders—making this a favorite among collectors today.
This particular 1970 El Camino SS 396 is a vivid representation of that legacy, finished in its factory-correct “75B” Cranberry Red with a striking Black vinyl top. Repainted at some point, the exterior retains its factory look and period-correct muscle car persona. Riding on 15” American Racing Torq Thrust wheels wrapped in staggered Cooper Cobra and Milestar Street tires (dated 2017 front, 2020 rear), it achieves an aggressive stance backed by real muscle under the hood.
Though not the original engine, the 396 cubic inch big-block V8 with a TV (1967) suffix code breathes fire through factory manifolds and a full dual exhaust system fitted with aftermarket mufflers. A 4-barrel Edelbrock 1906 carburetor handles fueling duties, while a Turbo 400 3-speed automatic transmission sends power to a 12-bolt rear end. This setup, complemented by power front disc brakes, power steering, front and rear sway bars, and rear air shocks, ensures this El Camino is more than just a pretty face—it’s a genuine street performer.
Inside, the car features a factory “756” code black vinyl interior, upgraded from its original bench to more desirable bucket seats with a center console and floor shifter. The dashboard houses an aftermarket tachometer (not reading correctly), a Pioneer AM/FM/USB/Auxiliary radio, and classic factory styling cues. Manual windows and locks, a driver’s side remote mirror, and tinted glass round out the interior comforts. The dash clock is present but non-functional—a charming quirk of its age.
Mechanically, this El Camino was given a clean bill of health during its inspection. It drives tight and strong, with a firm road presence reminiscent of its Chevelle SS sibling. The undercarriage remains very solid with original-style components and minor age-related patina, contributing to its authenticity. All essential systems including lighting, radio, speedometer, and heater are functional, and the car includes a Protect-O-Plate, build sheet, and other original documentation.
With only 250 miles showing on the odometer (actual mileage unknown), this SS 396 El Camino is a rare opportunity to capture the spirit of Chevrolet’s golden muscle era in a vehicle that can cruise, show, or haul with equal flair.
