1968 Ford Mustang GT California Special / Original 289 / Auto / AC

The 1968 Ford Mustang GT California Special (GT/CS) is a true classic with a fascinating backstory. The California Special was created as a limited-edition model by Ford's Western Region to capture the west coast's car culture vibe. Drawing inspiration from the Shelby GT500, the GT/CS featured unique styling cues like side scoops, a Shelby-inspired rear deck lid and spoiler, GT/CS side stripes, and Marchal fog lamps. Only about 4,118 GT/CS models were produced, making them a rare find today and highly coveted by collectors.

The example presented by PC Classic Cars is a well-preserved GT/CS, finished in its original “T” code Candy Apple Red paint with a repainted refresh. This car retains its authentic California Special touches, including the GT/CS fog lamps, decals, and hood pins. The exterior shines with classic Mustang charm, riding on 14-inch OE wheels wrapped in Cooper Cobra RWL tires. The car's vintage vibe is complemented by its functional hood turn signal indicators and retro-style AM/FM radio.

Under the hood lies the original, numbers-matching 289 cubic-inch V8 engine, a cornerstone of Mustang performance history. This 289 V8 runs strong and is paired with a C4 three-speed automatic transmission, providing smooth cruising and a nostalgic driving experience. Enhancements such as an Edelbrock intake, carburetor, Pertronix ignition, and an aluminum radiator add a tasteful blend of originality and reliability. Ceramic-coated headers feed into a dual exhaust system, delivering a throaty and unmistakable V8 sound.

The mechanical integrity of this Mustang is evident, with its power steering, power front disc brakes, and factory air conditioning (now converted to R134A refrigerant) all in working order. The odometer reads 73,752 miles, believed to be the actual mileage. A Marti Report and a large folder of receipts and paperwork add to its documented history.

Inside, the black "2A" code standard bucket seat interior offers a well-preserved and comfortable cabin. The bucket seats, center console, and floor shifter maintain the car’s vintage appeal. The dash clock remains functional, and the original dash and gauges are in great shape, with correct orange gauge needles. The interior is a mix of originality and subtle updates, including newer seat foam, a replaced package tray with speakers, and a solid feel throughout.

Beneath the surface, this GT/CS retains a remarkable amount of originality, with the undercarriage showcasing the original red oxide primer on its floors. The suspension and steering components have seen thoughtful maintenance, including newer lower control arms, shocks, sway bar bushings, and brake calipers. This attention to detail ensures the car drives beautifully, with reports of it cruising comfortably at highway speeds of 70-75 mph.

Overall, this 1968 Ford Mustang GT California Special is not only a rare and desirable model but also a well-maintained example that embodies the spirit of the classic Mustang era. With its mix of originality, thoughtful upgrades, and iconic California Special features, this Mustang is a time capsule on wheels, ready to offer a slice of classic American motoring.
