1965 Ford Mustang GT / 302 / Automatic / EFI / AC

1965 Ford Mustang GT – 302 V8, Sniper EFI, Automatic, AC – A Striking Restomod with Spirit and Style

By 1965, the Mustang had already cemented its status as the quintessential American pony car. Ford’s gamble on a youth-oriented, performance-capable coupe had paid off spectacularly—within just months of its launch in 1964, Mustangs were everywhere, gracing driveways, racetracks, and movie screens alike. That inaugural full production year marked the beginning of a cultural icon, with the GT package arriving to add even more excitement. GT models came standard with fog lights, disc brakes, and special badging—a signal that this wasn’t just a stylish cruiser but a machine with muscle to match its charm.

This particular 1965 Ford Mustang GT, once delivered from the factory as an A-Code 289 car, has been transformed into a vibrant, performance-minded restomod that still celebrates its heritage. Now powered by a strong-running 302 V8 (casting number C9OE-6015-C), this non-original engine adds modern capability to an iconic frame. The upgrade to a Sniper EFI (electronic fuel injection) system replaces the traditional carburetor setup and enhances both reliability and drivability, making cold starts and smooth cruising effortless. A C4 3-speed automatic transmission ensures the ride remains relaxed yet responsive, shifting seamlessly at all speeds.

Finished in a bold red with a white vinyl top—departing from its original Wimbledon White—the exterior is unmistakably classic Mustang but with added flair. Chrome trumpet exhaust tips, GT badging, and 14-inch style stamped wheels wrapped in Cooper Cobra Radial GT tires (dated 2022) complete the sporty look. The trumpet-style dual exhaust system with headers, an H-pipe, and Super Turbo mufflers gives this GT the aggressive soundtrack it deserves.

Inside, the cabin is finished in its factory-correct red color scheme, now accented with tasteful white inserts. The bucket seats, floor shifter, and two-tone colorway capture the Mustang’s signature ‘60s charm. Features like the AM/FM cassette stereo, under-dash AC system (upgraded with an aftermarket compressor and blowing cold), and auxiliary gauges (oil, temp, volt) blend the retro aesthetic with modern comfort. A Custom Autosound six-disc CD changer is mounted in the trunk for those who want analog entertainment in a digital age.

Mechanically, this Mustang shines. It rides on an 8” Ford rear differential and benefits from upgrades like an aluminum intake, aluminum radiator with a flex fan, aftermarket front sway bar, and Pertronix electronic ignition conversion. The front disc brakes and power steering bring improved control and comfort. The undercarriage, per the inspection, remains very solid, with noted upgrades to the suspension including replaced lower control arms and newer ball joints—all enhancing ride quality and responsiveness.

The odometer shows 23,056 miles, though actual mileage is unverified. What is certain is that this Mustang GT is a well-loved and thoughtfully upgraded example, blending mid-century style with late-model reliability. With its striking visual presence, proven mechanicals, and thoughtful enhancements, it serves as a perfect time capsule of American automotive culture—one that continues to turn heads and warm hearts.
