1972 Ford Mustang Convertible / 302 / Ram Air / Automatic / QA1 Coilovers

1972 Ford Mustang Convertible – A V8 Icon with Modern Punch

The 1972 Ford Mustang marked the final year of the first generation’s bold redesign, bridging the classic pony car era with the muscle car boom. Known for its aggressive styling, long hood, and short rear deck, the '72 Mustang continued to offer a thrilling drive, even as tightening emissions standards started to change the landscape. Convertibles were becoming increasingly rare by the early 1970s, making this 1972 Mustang Convertible a standout piece of American automotive history.

This particular Mustang, VIN 2F03F105440, was built at Ford's Dearborn plant and rolled off the line on August 31, 1971, just seven days behind schedule. Originally finished in Gold Glow Metallic (paint code 6F) with a black knit vinyl bucket seat interior (trim code CA), it was sold through Huntington Motors Inc. in Arcadia, California. The Mustang was well-optioned from the factory with a white power top, power steering, power front disc brakes, a console, and color-keyed racing mirrors — a solid configuration for a California cruiser.

Today, this Mustang shines in a vivid red repaint that accentuates its classic lines and performance personality. While it wears its original spirit proudly, it benefits from a host of tasteful upgrades designed to enhance its performance and drivability.

Engine and Performance

Under the hood lies a strong-running, date code correct 302 V8, enhanced with modern performance parts. It breathes through an aftermarket Ram Air setup and features ceramic-coated headers, an H-pipe dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers, and full tailpipes with tips. Power delivery is smooth and responsive thanks to an Edelbrock Performer aluminum intake and an Edelbrock carburetor. Helping keep things cool is a Champion aluminum radiator, while ignition duties are handled by an MSD distributor and coil.

Backing the powerful small block is the trusty C4 3-speed automatic transmission, linked to an 8-inch rear differential. Suspension upgrades include QA1 adjustable front coilovers, giving the Mustang better handling and a more planted feel without sacrificing ride quality. The car rolls on classic 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A white letter tires, sized 235/60R15.

Interior and Features

The interior maintains a stock appearance with the black knit vinyl bucket seats and factory-style console. A few modern touches, like a Pioneer CD/AM/FM stereo and a two-gauge pod (oil pressure and water temperature), enhance functionality without detracting from the vintage vibe. A Cobra-style wood steering wheel adds a sporty, period-correct touch to the cockpit.

Manual windows and locks, a power convertible top with glass backlite, and a floor shifter round out the driving experience. While air conditioning is not equipped, the open-air feel of the convertible more than makes up for it.

The dash, though showing some signs of its age, presents well, and the overall cabin condition reflects care and pride of ownership.

Mechanical Condition

This Mustang has been thoroughly inspected and received positive marks for its strong mechanical condition. It shows 39,047 miles on the odometer (though actual mileage cannot be verified). The vehicle runs and drives exceptionally well — the engine feels significantly stronger than a stock 302, and the transmission shifts with a firm, confident action. Brake performance is solid thanks to the power front disc setup, and the steering is precise with newer components like the idler arm, pitman arm, and tie rods.

Supporting documentation includes a Deluxe Marti Report and a large folder of receipts and miscellaneous paperwork, attesting to its maintenance and upgrades over the years. The undercarriage remains solid, with mostly original factory undercoating and some minor fiberglass repairs noted in non-critical areas — a testament to its California roots and careful preservation.

A Classic Mustang Built to Drive and Enjoy

This 1972 Ford Mustang Convertible blends vintage charm with tasteful upgrades that make it a joy on the road today. It captures the spirit of an era when Mustangs ruled America's highways, yet it offers the kind of reliable performance that makes it ready for modern cruising. From its punchy 302 V8 to its classic drop-top silhouette, this Mustang remains a true symbol of American freedom on four wheels.
