1964 Pontiac GTO / Original 389 V8 / Tri-Power / Automatic

1964 Pontiac GTO – A Pioneer of Performance Reimagined

When Pontiac introduced the GTO in 1964, it did more than just offer an options package — it sparked a revolution. Widely credited as the vehicle that ignited the American muscle car era, the '64 GTO was a bold experiment by a forward-thinking team led by John DeLorean, Jim Wangers, and Bill Collins. It combined a midsize Tempest chassis with the mighty 389 cubic inch V8, resulting in a car that could outrun much of what Detroit had to offer, yet remained attainable for the everyman thrill-seeker. The GTO wasn’t just about brute strength — it was a carefully tuned experience of speed, handling, and unmistakable street presence.

A Heritage-Inspired Time Capsule

This beautifully preserved 1964 Pontiac GTO, finished in factory-correct C2 Cameo Ivory with a black vinyl top, captures the essence of its era while embracing tasteful enhancements for modern drivability. The car proudly retains its original 389ci V8 engine, with casting number 9773155 and a correct February 1964 date code. It has been upgraded with a Tri-Power carburetion setup, offering three two-barrel carbs — a hallmark of GTO performance lore, though not original to this specific car. Paired with a Turbo 350 3-speed automatic transmission, it delivers smooth cruising and torque-rich performance ideal for both spirited driving and relaxed weekends.

With an odometer reading of 38,962 miles (unverified), this GTO has spent its life well cared-for, now sporting a set of polished 17" American Racing Torque Thrust wheels wrapped in 245/45R17 tires from 2022 and 2024. Behind the scenes, the car features power steering and power drum brakes at all four corners, adding ease and predictability to its muscle car manners.

Well-Documented and Thoroughly Checked

As part of PC Classic Cars’ meticulous inspection process, this GTO’s engine bay and undercarriage tell the story of care and preservation. The original appearance under the hood is enhanced by a newer hood insulator, and the engine bay houses subtle upgrades like a Pertronix electronic ignition conversion and aftermarket flexible dipstick. Though minor seepage was noted on the engine and transmission pans — par for the course in vintage metal — all systems checked out as functional, from lighting to heater, with the radio operational and upgraded for a retro-modern vibe.

Suspension components have seen attention over the years, with updated control arm bushings and rear air shocksoffering confident road manners. A front sway bar further enhances handling, while the exhaust system — featuring dual pipes, an H-pipe configuration, and Flowmaster mufflers — delivers the proper deep-throated soundtrack expected from Pontiac’s performance legend.

Inside the Icon

Inside, the GTO carries its Code 214 black interior, featuring bucket seats, center console, and console shifter, staying true to its sport-oriented roots. While some aging is present — including wear to the driver seat foam and cracking in the original steering wheel (which is still included with the car) — the overall look remains authentic and well-kept. A three-gauge pod under the dash offers a glimpse into vital signs like oil pressure and coolant temperature, while two discreet 6x9 speakers in the package tray enhance the driving experience.

A Story Preserved

This GTO is accompanied by PHS documentation and a folder of receipts and paperwork, adding credibility to its history and restoration journey. The body remains very solid underneath, with sectioned repairs noted on the driver side floor pan, trunk pan, and both quarter panels — all done to a high standard. The paint presents beautifully overall, with only minor waviness and trim aging as gentle reminders of the car’s authentic vintage appeal.

From its period-correct aesthetics to the spirited Tri-Power performance and documented care, this 1964 GTO offers an unforgettable snapshot of American performance car culture
