Restored 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle / 402 V8 / M22 4 Speed / AC

Time Capsule: 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle – 402 V8 / M22 4-Speed / Factory AC

Few names in American automotive history evoke as much admiration as the Chevrolet Chevelle, and the 1971 model year was no exception. Balancing bold styling with raw performance, the Chevelle offered buyers a wide range of configurations—from practical daily cruisers to fire-breathing muscle cars. By 1971, tightening emissions regulations and insurance hikes began to dim the golden age of high-performance muscle machines, but the Chevelle remained a defiant symbol of power and style. Today, surviving examples like this beautifully restored 1971 Chevelle serve as rolling tributes to an era that defined American car culture.

Factory AC, Big Block Soul & 4-Speed Muscle

This 1971 Chevelle, finished in its original code “49” Antique Green, underwent a thorough frame-off restoration, returning it to a condition that celebrates both its factory roots and tasteful performance upgrades. While the body retains its vintage SS styling cues—SS stripes, emblems, cowl hood, and hood pins—underneath the surface lies a more aggressive spirit.

At its heart beats a 402 cubic inch big block V8, not original to the car but bearing the CTX suffix code (1970) and built to L78 specs, including a Weiand aluminum intake, Holley 750 double pumper carb, Hooker ceramic-coated headers, and Flowmaster American Thunder dual exhaust. It’s a motor originally intended for a truck application, now transformed into a street-worthy powerhouse that runs stronger than many stock SS counterparts.

That power is channeled through a rebuilt Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed transmission with a new case and Hurst shifter, known for its unmistakable whine and rugged gear engagement. The drivetrain finishes with a reliable 10-bolt rear end, keeping power planted with confidence.

Riding Refined: Comfort Meets Classic Muscle

One of the most appealing aspects of this Chevelle is its blend of comfort and vintage flair. Originally coded for a black interior, it now sports a refreshed green stock-style cabin featuring a bench seat, factory tachometer, and a comfort grip steering wheel. Additional touches include a retro-style AM/FM stereo and LED backlighting in the gauge cluster, lending a subtle modern touch to the classic cockpit.

Mechanically, this Chevelle is dialed-in. The power front disc brakes, power steering, and cold factory air conditioning make it a joy to drive in any setting. The car was recently test-driven for 40 miles without issue and reportedly cruises effortlessly at 70 mph (~3,500 RPM). Even the clutch and shifter action reflect a well-maintained machine that has been sorted mechanically as well as cosmetically.

Rolling on Modern Style with Classic Presence

The stance is completed by a set of 17-inch rally-style wheels wrapped in Continental 255/45 tires (dated 2022), providing both visual appeal and modern road performance. The car's undercarriage reflects its comprehensive restoration with gloss black painted floors and frame, and replaced suspension and steering components that check out in great condition.

While the odometer reads 79,129 miles, the actual mileage cannot be verified—but what’s certain is the high level of care and investment poured into this build. From the repainted body to the upgraded drivetrain, this Chevelle radiates character and confidence.

Legacy on the Highway

This 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle stands as a snapshot of American muscle heritage—reborn not as a trailer queen, but as a car that begs to be driven. With its rebuilt drivetrain, cold AC, original color palette, and timeless SS styling, it’s a vehicle that perfectly captures what enthusiasts love about the golden era of muscle cars.
