1970 Ford Mustang Sportsroof / Shaker / Original 351W / AC

1970 Ford Mustang Sportsroof – A True Muscle Car Icon

The 1970 Ford Mustang marked the final evolution of the first-generation Mustang before a major redesign in 1971. With aggressive styling, a refined front-end treatment, and a wide array of performance options, the ’70 model stood as a bridge between the late-’60s pony car wars and the coming decade’s muscle era. One of the standout variations of this model was the Sportsroof, Ford’s fastback offering, which exuded a race-inspired design while maintaining everyday drivability.

This particular 1970 Mustang Sportsroof is a striking example of the breed, featuring an original numbers-matching 351 Windsor V8 and an FMX three-speed automatic transmission. With just over 83,500 miles on the odometer, this classic fastback carries a legacy of performance and presence.

Power and Performance

Under the hood, this Mustang retains its factory-correct 351W engine, as confirmed by the Marti Report. While many H-code Mustangs of this year came with the 351 Cleveland, early-production models—like this one—sometimes left the factory with the Windsor, making it a unique piece of Mustang history. The C90E block, cast in August of 1969, aligns perfectly with the car’s build date of November 28, 1969, ensuring that this is indeed the original powerplant.

To enhance performance and drivability, the car has been upgraded with an Edelbrock aluminum intake, Edelbrock 1406 carburetor, and an MSD ignition system, all working together to optimize the Windsor’s power delivery. The exhaust system, featuring headers, an H-pipe, Flowmaster mufflers, and full tailpipes, gives this Mustang a deep, aggressive growl that matches its bold appearance.

Classic Mustang Styling

Draped in a vibrant red finish, this Mustang originally wore Bright Gold Metallic (Code K) from the factory. Its sporty aesthetic is further accentuated by iconic Mustang features such as the Shaker hood scoop, hood pins, rear spoiler, and rear window louvers. The 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in staggered tires (205/70 up front and 245/60 in the rear) add to its muscle car stance, giving it the perfect blend of vintage cool and road-ready aggression.

Underneath, the car remains structurally sound, with the factory radiator support and inner fenders still intact, even showing traces of the original gold paint. A solid Ford 9” rear end and aftermarket traction bars provide added stability and grip, ensuring that this Mustang handles its power with confidence

Comfort and Interior Features

Inside, the Mustang features its original Code TA Black Knit Vinyl bucket seats, offering a period-correct cabin that remains stylish and inviting. The Lecarra steering wheel adds a sporty touch, while the Alpine AM/FM cassette radio provides vintage tunes for cruising. Additional comfort is provided by an aftermarket Old Air Products air conditioning system, which blows cold for those warm-weather drives.

Though this Mustang stays true to its classic roots with manual windows, manual locks, and a floor-mounted shifter, it has been well-maintained over the years. The dash and gauges are in good shape, and new carpeting enhances the overall interior presentation.

A Mustang with Pedigree

With its numbers-matching 351 Windsor, classic fastback styling, and performance-enhancing upgrades, this 1970 Mustang Sportsroof embodies the essence of a true muscle car. Its history, as confirmed by the Marti Report, further solidifies its uniqueness among early-production 1970 models.

Whether admired for its raw power, unmistakable style, or historical significance, this Mustang represents an era when Ford dominated the streets with its pony car lineup.
