1966 Chevrolet Impala SS / Original 327 V8 / Automatic / AC

1966 Chevrolet Impala SS – A Sleek Black Beauty with a Big Block Soul

The 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS represents a golden era in American automotive history—when style, strength, and sport met in perfect harmony. As the final year of the fourth-generation Impala, 1966 saw Chevrolet perfecting its full-size performance coupe. The SS (Super Sport) badge meant more than just flair; it was the designation for Chevrolet’s top-tier muscle-luxury blend, a car that could cruise in comfort yet deliver serious power when prompted.

The Impala SS lineup in 1966 came standard with bucket seats and a center console, and offered a wide range of V8 engines. This particular example—finished in a striking black over custom black and white interior—was originally born in Ermine White with all-black vinyl inside. It features the original 327-cubic-inch V8, paired to a smooth 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Though it now wears a non-original paint scheme and a personalized interior, the heart and soul of this Impala SS remain beautifully intact.

With the date-code correct engine still in place, this Impala SS carries a sense of authenticity that’s increasingly rare in the classic car world. Under the hood, the 327 V8 breathes through a Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor mounted on an Edelbrock aluminum intake—an upgrade that enhances both performance and reliability. The Mallory distributor ensures crisp ignition, while a dual exhaust system with stock-style mufflers and full tailpipes gives it that unmistakable muscle car sound.

Aesthetically, this Impala stands tall on 15-inch American Racing Torque Thrust D wheels wrapped in Futura GLS raised white-letter tires. The classic black vinyl top, body side moldings, and original wheel lip and rocker moldings preserve the SS's timeless look. Subtle enhancements like a three-gauge pod (monitoring oil pressure, water temperature, and voltage) and an aluminum radiator overflow reservoir reflect the thoughtful updates made for modern drivability.

Inside, the cabin offers a sporty black and white custom look, retaining its original layout with factory bucket seats, center console, and floor shifter. The factory dash clock remains in place, while an aftermarket AM/FM cassette radio brings a nostalgic, late-20th-century vibe. While the interior shows gentle signs of age, it’s clear this Impala has been well loved—right down to the functional factory air conditioning, now converted to R134A with an Old Air Products POA valve conversion kit. The AC blows cold, keeping those summer cruises just as comfortable as they are cool.

Mechanically, this Impala SS is a solid driver. The car has been thoughtfully maintained, with key suspension components like ball joints, shocks, and tie rods already replaced. The 10-bolt rear end, front sway bar, and rear air shocks support a composed ride, while the power steering and four-wheel drum brakes make for a smooth, period-correct driving experience. The undercarriage, meanwhile, remains largely original with factory undercoating still visible—a testament to its well-preserved New Mexico history.

With just over 20,000 miles showing on the odometer—though unverified—this Super Sport has undoubtedly spent its life carefully enjoyed. Having reportedly lived its entire life in New Mexico before arriving in Sherman, Texas, this Impala’s story is one of sunshine and survival, all wrapped in the kind of muscular elegance that made the SS badge iconic.
